I started to work on Tracker.py, because I enjoy hiking, and like to use my N95 to see my location on a digitized map.

Although I usually leave well prepared for a trip (with respect to necessities), I generally go where the weather takes me, and so often find myself in a small village where finding even a paper map can be a tough job, let alone finding a decent digital map. Since I like to travel light, I usually don't bring a laptop or scanner, and so I very much wish to use my N95 camera to scan the map, and use that map to track my wereabouts while hiking.

The main purpose of Tracker.py, is to support this goal as much as possible. You can take a picture with the camera (I generally use a 3Mpix setting, but tested with 5Mpix as well), move it to the e:\maps directory (rename it to your liking), and then load it in Tracker.py.
Once loaded, it requires at least 2 reference points to be set, and then it is ready for use. I usually calibrate a new map twice, first a short 15 minute walk to gather a basic calibration. Then after about an hour on my first restbreak, I recalibrate, and from then on the map is usually quite reliable.

Besides showing your current position on the map, you can see some basic information in the dashview, where heading is shown (compas), altitude and speed, as well as a clock.

Four different styles of pool are available in both the Quick Match and Competition modes; 8 Ball (UK), 8 Ball (US), 9 Ball and Straight Pool. It's all about putting balls in holes (snigger), but you can never have too much choice is the Pocket Gamer motto, so at least the alternatives are present for anyone who does have a preference for a particular set of rules.

Lately we've come to expect our virtual pool and snooker tables to be in full 3D. It's the 21st Century, after all. So it's interesting to see Shadow Light forego modern trends and return to a top-down view with no free-roaming camera to put you at eye level with every pocket and cushion from any angle. The remarkable thing about Steve Davis Pool Star's visuals is the rather cinematic approach it takes to displaying your shots.

Aiming, shooting and allocating balls and pockets are all done from above by default, which is very functional - if a little flat by other, 3D games' standards. It compensates for this by including other pre-rendered shots of the table from the perspective of the pockets and various other angles, changing views as the action bounces around the cushions. You can also aim from these fixed angles, which helps in certain circumstances, but is less useful in general than the overhead view. The pre-rendering makes for some beautifully smooth and detailed graphics, and within two minutes - nay 30 seconds - you'll have entirely forgotten you're playing on a two dimensional table and feel in complete harmony with your balls (chortle chuckle).

Taking a shot is split up into easily operated stages. Lining up, putting spin on the ball, selecting a ball and pocket combination and the power of the shot follow each other in turn. This systematic approach makes it beautifully simple to control the entire game with a single thumb without feeling as though any aspect of a shot is out of reach.

The AI is rather harsh, punishing you quite severely for missing a single shot (even on the break), but there's a variety of alternatives to playing against virtual sharks. Trick shots are always a favourite, and Steve Davis Pool Star has a superb selection. There's also pass-to-play multiplayer, which, short of the seldom-used Bluetooth multiplayer concept, is always a first-rate addition to any sporting title.

The original Pool Star game, which didn't feature the stony-faced license of any hot snooker talent, made use of a loose 'pool hall hustler' storyline to add incentive to the gameplay. Whether or not the omission hurts the game is very much a matter of taste. The removal of the cash-grabbing premise doesn't harm the game too much, though, and even goes a step toward making this a more accessible and recognisable experience for the British, snooker-loving public.

There's a significant amount of competition out there but Steve Davis Pool Star lifts itself from the common stock by allowing itself to be a simple, thorough and welcoming addition to the pantheon of pool and snooker games in the mobile market. I can say, with all certainty, you won't regret having a good hard play with Steve's balls (guffaw!).

Tesco has launched a new Talkwi-fi VoIP service for mobile phones that allows it to use Wi-Fi networks to cut customer's call costs.

Putting VoIP onto the S60 phones isn't such a huge problem as the most of the handsets come with Session Initiation Protocol stack so the downloaded application is generally more about getting the right settings onto the phone than enabling it to use VoIP.

Unfortunately, Tesco is currently limited only to four Nokia S60 Smartphones, Nokia N95, N81, E65 and E51 but more are likely to be added in the near future.

When in a Wi-Fi area, in the comfort of your own home, the discomfort of your own work or some Starbucks hot-spot, you can use the app to make VoIP calls on your mobile for free to other Tesco Talkwi-fi users and for not very much to others.

The application, which can be set to run on start-up, will automatically detect whether the other person is on the same service, allowing free calls, or whether it can route the call over Wi-Fi to offer a cheaper service.

We tried using it, but found that the performance was not impressive. Also, we were not able to use it over the Internet because we are behind a proxy server, and this application requires you to have a live IP. There are other Windows Mobile applications available on the Internet that you can use to control your computer using Wi-Fi. We hope to bring you that project in the near future.

The software and hardware requirements for this project are:

A Blue tooth Dongle

This can have a range between 10 to 100 meters, depending on your requirement and budget. A Bluetooth dongle that supports Bluetooth serial ports is preferable. We used an SMC Bluetooth dongle which is easy to configure and has a range of 10 meters. This will cost you around Rs 500. This, of course, is assuming your computer doesn’t already have Bluetooth built-in.

Any smart phone running Series 60 (S60) 1st and 2nd edition.

The application we used here does not yet support S60 3rd edition or phones that run on propriety operating systems, even if they are Java-enabled. We used a Nokia 6630 for this workshop.

Control freak symbian software

This can be downloaded for free from ‘http://mtvoid. com’.. This download contains the programs that you’ll have to install on your Windows computer and also the smart phone. We have used Windows XP for this workshop.Control Freak uses a Winamp plug-in to start the server. Winamp can be downloaded for free from ‘http://www.winamp.com’.

Winamp must be installed on the computer before installing Control Freak.

COMPUTER:

Any computer that runs on Windows 2000 or higher and has a free USB port to support the Bluetooth dongle will do. A Bluetooth-enabled laptop will also be fine for this purpose.

The installation is quite simple. Just download Control Freak and save it on your computer. Double click the .exe file and keep clicking next. No configuration is needed. The application will place a ‘controlFreak.sis’ file on your desktop. This file is the client software that needs to be installed on your mobile phone. Install it through Bluetooth or through the software bundled with your phone. After installing it on the phone, a new item titled ‘CtrlFreak’ will appear in the applications menu. When the Control Freak PC application finishes installing, it will launch Winamp and the Winamp-plugin will try to configure itself automatically. If you are using your computer’s default Bluetooth drivers, no manual changes are needed. If you are using a Bluetooth device that requires installed drivers, you should select ‘Installed other’ as the Bluetooth driver. You then need to set the Bluetooth virtual serial port (also called a COM port which the plug-in will use to communicate with the phone application. This process is usually easy, but it varies depending on your Bluetooth software. An important thing to remember is that your computer uses separate COM ports for incoming and outgoing connections. You need to check your Bluetooth software and make sure that you are using the incoming COM port correctly.

Next, open Winamp and type the shortcut combination ‘Ctrl + F’. A window that displays the connection properties of the Bluetooth pops up .Set the Bluetooth driver as ‘installed other’ and choose the COM port you installed using Bluetooth, Select the ‘Startup with Winamp’ check box if you want the server to load every time you open Winamp. Click ‘OK’ to finish.

Now start the ‘CtrlFreak’ application on your mobile, choose ‘Options’ and select connect. The software will ask you to connect to the computer. Here you may have to enter a pass code on both the mobile and the computer to pair the device with your PC. Usually the pass code is ‘0000′. Once your mobile is connected to the computer, the display shows the current song playing in winamp. Choose ‘Options’ and select ‘Computer Desktop control (8)’ from the application menu. The moment you click on ‘Select’ the screen will display the same content that is being shown on the computer

You can access the computer from a distance of 10 to 100 meters depending on the Bluetooth dongle and phone you are using. The bandwidth may be affected if you have too many walls between your computer and the mobile.

You can watch full screen videos or view photographs by controlling your PC with your mobile. You can switch from normal screen mode to horizontal full screen mode, change the speed of the mouse cursor on the PC, or change the image type you receive from automatic to BMP or JPEG. You can also set how your phone disables remote. control when you receive a call. You can add, remove playlists, and even use the screen to show a Winamp-style spectrum analyzer while playing a song

You can also use this application to remotely (temporarily) use your computer while you are away from your desk at the office or to browse the Internet using your computer if you have a compatible mobile phone with a fairly large screen.

* Global System for Mobile Communications

This is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world. GSM service is used by over 6 billion people across more than 200 countries. The GSM standard makes international roaming pretty common between mobile phone service providers, enabling all their subscribers to use their cell phones in different parts of the world.

* Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)

CDMA is a form of multiplexing and a method of multiple access that does not divide up the channel by time, or frequency, but instead encodes data with a special code associated with each channel and uses the constructive interference properties of the special codes which can perform the multiplexing. CDMA also refers to digital cellular telephony systems that use this multiple access scheme. CDMA phones usually do not need a SIM card.

* General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)

GPRS is a mobile data service available to subscribers of GSM mobile phones. GPRS data transfer is mostly charged per kilobyte (KB) of transferred data to and from the cell phone. GPRS is utilized for services such as Internet and MMS. In the future, it is still anticipated that low cost voice over IP will be made available in mobile phones.

* Subscriber Identity Module (SIM)

SIM is a removable smart card that is used in the cell phone and was available in two standard sizes. Initially it was the size of a credit card, while its more popular and widely used mini version has a width of 25 mm.This has been adopted by most cell phone manufacturers. The SIM card securely stores a key code which identifies a mobile phone to its service provider.

* Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE)

EDGE is an enhancement to the GSM networks which makes use of theTDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) frame structure, logic channel and 200 KHz carrier bandwidth. EDGE is not only capable of providing three times the data capacity of GPRS but also has improved data transmission reliability. EDGE is employed for advanced mobile services that require high data transmission rate such as downloading of audio and video clips, high speed and quality Internet access etc, EDGE is classified as a 2.75G network technology.

* Push-to-Talk (PTT)

PTT also known as Press-to-Transmit, is a method of conversing on half-duplex communication lines by making use of a momentary button to switch from voice reception mode to transmission mode. Some mobile operators offer the PPT service on mobile phones; it allows voice signals to be transmitted from one user to another on the system without the need of an established existing connection.

* 3G- 3rd Generation Technology

3G (or 3-G) is short for third-generation technology. It is used in the context of mobile phone standards. The services associated with 3G provide the ability to transfer simultaneously both voice data (a telephone call) and non-voice data (such as downloading information, exchanging email, and instant messaging). In marketing 3G services, video telephony has often been used as the killer application for 3G.Worldwide roll-out of 3G networks was delayed in some countries by the enormous costs of additional spectrum licensing fees. In many parts of the world 3G networks do not use the same radio frequencies as 2G, requiring mobile operators to build entirely new networks and license entirely new frequencies; a notable exception is the United States where carriers operate 3G service in the same frequencies as other services. The license fees in some European countries were particularly high, bolstered by initial excitement over 3G’s potential. Other delays were as a result of the expenses related to upgrading equipment for the new systems. Japan and South Korea were relatively quick to adopt 3G, because their governments prioritize technological infrastructure development, and spectrum licensing fees are minimal. Currently 3G compatible phones in are sold in India by Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung etc, but currently no operators are providing their services based on 3G.
